Maybe you should tell him how feel nicely. Tell him you really like him and don't wanna break up, but you feel smothered sometimes and you need space occasionally. Instead of saying things like, "You're smothering me" say things "I'm just independent, etc etc." Make it seem like it's your personality and not him and it won't hurt him as much. If he cares about staying with you, he should back off.
