What's best to record live shows in a smaller venue (music)?

Know of any kinda smaller camcorders that we can use for shows that won't distort sound too badly and has kinda crisp details as far as video? I'd love to get a flip cam, but I have no idea. It's kinda hard to be hauling around the legit (expensive) stuff when there's a million people around you, lol.
