Aw cute!! Hmm okay well you guys seem to be pretty close already and comfortable with each other. So I don't see any reason why you can't just be up front about it and say something like, "I know you mentioned dating when school starts up, but I actually wondered if you might want to start sooner...?" and I think he will respond well!
